Canada Line to open with free day on Aug. 17
Service will be free for one day when the $2.05-billion Canada Line rapid transit project opens Monday, Aug. 17.
Large crowds are expected to check out the 19-kilometre, 16-station connection between downtown Vancouver, Richmond and the Vancouver International Airport for the opening, which will go from 1 to 9 p.m.
There will be some community events planned for opening day, which will include demonstrations of Paralympic sports.
The first day of regular service will be Aug. 18, beginning with a 4:50 a.m. departure from Waterfront Station to YVR and continuing through 1:15 a.m. Service northbound from Richmond will start at 5:05 a.m. and conclude at 12:48 a.m.
While an add-on fare of $2.50 was to be charged for trips to the airport, TransLink has decided to waive that fee until the end of the year as a marketing strategy to see how many people choose the Canada Line over other alternatives to getting to Sea Island.
The end-to-end trip on the line is supposed to take 25 minutes.
